Flossing can be tricky at times, especially for children, which is why it’s important to help your child as much as possible. Flossing doesn’t have to be as difficult as many people make it out to be, so we encourage you to give your child flossing motivation by doing the following things:
Show them the way
Be an example for your child and show them the way of flossing. First, floss your own smile and demonstrate how to clean between each tooth. Then, floss between a few of your child’s teeth and let them look in the mirror to see how you are doing it. Finally, let them floss their own smile and guide them along the way. Make sure they are gentle along the gum line.
Praise good behavior
It is very important that you praise your child every time they floss. If they feel accomplished after flossing, they will likely floss more. You can also come up with a system that rewards your child for flossing, whether that’s giving them their favorite treat, toy, or activity every time they floss.
Buy kid-friendly flossing products
If your child has a flossing product they love, there is a higher chance that they will enjoy flossing more. So, take them to the store with you and have them pick out a flossing product that has their favorite cartoon character or superhero on it.
Tell them about the Tooth Fairy
The Tooth Fairy is a great myth that motivates children to take care of their teeth. You can tell your child that if the tooth that they lose is in great condition because of flossing, the Tooth Fairy will reward them even more.
